Gothic and ambitious, with a rustic, lived-in sound, its a meditation on love curdling into its opposite, on recrimination defining relationships, on hope finally filtering through doubt.

David Wax Museum (7-15)

July 15, 2016 10:00 PM

"Suz and I started this band as friends," says David Wax, "but now we're married and have a child and have our family on the road with us. The stakes are different." Those stakes are what lie at the heart of David Wax Museums fourth and boldest studio album to date, Guesthouse (to be released October 16 on Thirty Tigers). Its the sound of a band reconciling the accountability of marriage and parenthood with the uncertainty and challenges of life on the road; of coming to terms with the limitations of the folk tag that launched their career and pushing past it into uncharted musical territory; of reimagining their entire approach in the studio to capture the magic and the bliss of their live show. In typical David Wax Museum fashion, the songs on Guesthouse are simplistic and sophisticated, elegant and plainspoken all at once. Rather than succumbing to the weight of the newfound responsibilities that landed on their doorstep, the band has leaned into the challenges to capture a brilliant portrait of the messy beauty of it all. The roots of David Wax Museum stretch back nearly a decade, and all the way from New England to Mexico. As a student at Harvard, Wax began traveling south of the border to study and immerse himself in the countrys traditional music and culture. Back in Boston, he met fiddler/singer Suz Slezak, whose love of traditional American and Irish folk music fused with Waxs Mexo-Americana into a singular, energetic blend that captivated audiences and critics alike. Their 2010 breakout performance at the Newport Folk Festival made them the most talked-about band of the weekend, with NPR hailing them as pure, irresistible joy. They released a trio of albums that earned escalating raves everywhere from SPIN and Entertainment Weekly (who described them as sounding like Andrew Bird with a Mexican folk bent) to the New York Times and The Guardian (which dubbed the music global crossover at its best). They earned an invitation to return to Newport, this time on the main stage, as well as dates supporting The Avett Brothers, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Buena Vista Social Club, and more.

We have the capacity to screen work on 16mm, super-8, sometimes with multiple projectors, sometimes including live sound or performance accompaniment, as well as HD and SD video. Beginning in October 2014, the Cellular Cinema community has welcomed guest curators from across the country and has featured work of numerous nationally renowned and local artists.

Ages and Ages (9-14)

September 14, 2016 8:00 PM

If Ages and Ages debut album Alright You Restless declared independence from the cynicism and self-consciousness plaguing a generation; and the follow-up Divisionary was an exercise in confronting change, conflict, and loss; Something to Ruin addresses the debris of our collective failures and asks whether we might be better off letting go and starting over. Recorded at Isaac Brocks studio (Ice Cream Party), this album still has plenty of the infectious and joyful melodies the band is known for, without shying away from some serious subject matter. Early on in the writing process of this record, band leaders Tim Perry and Rob Oberdorfer traveled to Central America, visiting indigenous ruins, partly engulfed by the surrounding forests a tangible reminder of the impermanence of human civilization and the resilience of nature. In the meantime, their hometown of Portland, Oregon was being engulfed by something entirely different. Like so many other cities around the country, rapid growth and development were changing both landscape and culture. In part, Something to Ruin is an exploration of what its like to watch your surroundings implode in a frenzy of real estate development and lifestyle branding. Songs like Kick Me Out and My Cold Reflection describe an existence where almost everything is monetized and loses its meaning. The albums first track They Want More, deals with the struggle to live an honest life in this type of superficial cultural landscape.
