Cellular Cinema is an organically evolving, ongoing screening series of experimental film, video and performance. As far as we know its the only regularly occurring event in Minneapolis or St. Paul that features short form, experimental contemporary moving image art. The Cellular Cinema community is dedicated to the idea that moving image art can be a realm of exploration, improvisation and play on a small scale, using a wide range of tools, techniques and technologies, unbound by the commercial considerations of mainstream narrative media. We have the capacity to screen work on 16mm, super-8, sometimes with multiple projectors, sometimes including live sound or performance accompaniment, as well as HD and SD video. Beginning in October 2014, the Cellular Cinema community has welcomed guest curators from across the country and has featured work of numerous nationally renowned and local artists.

The Best of Hank and Rita: A Barroom Operetta in One Act (6-12)

The 2015 comedy-drama-within-a-concert returns for its final show at Bryant-Lake Bowl. See the show called Funny, sad, smart and really original (Jim Walsh, All Over but the Shouting) before it hits the road. With a script and music by Joe Tougas, the show is a real-time concert by the fictional Hank & Rita. Their love-drenched tunes hit a brief sweet spot in the 1970s. But that was 15 years and countless scandals ago. Venues and audiences have grown smaller and tonight theyre in their smallest gig yet. A bowling alley, no less. It's also Ritas last night her goodbye letter awaits Hank after the show. Ritas finished with the whole act, which includes their marriage. A bit into the show, a request sends them off their perky set list and into stark, inconvenient memories. Soon theyre requesting songs of each other, songs evoking heartache, anger, revenge, lust and hope.

Rock of Love: A Readers Theater Presentation (6-21)

In 2007, rock star and Poison front man Bret Michaels set out to find true love. This quest was documented in the VH1 reality series, "Rock of Love, in which 25 women vied for Michaels' love through a series of competitions. This verbatim reading of a transcribed episode will explore the range of human experience the television show engendered. Hosted and facilitated by Mary Jo Pehl (Mystery Science Theater 3000, RenFest), some 25 local actors, non-actors, and special guests have been cast irrespective of gender, sexual preference or identity, race, creed, or suitability for the role. Should any cast members fail to appear for whatever reason, audience members will be dragooned to read a part.
