Cabaret chanteuse Mistress Ginger delves into the Kurt Weill songbook, exploring dark corners of the human experience, tripping through seedy beer halls, and finding redemption lost in the stars and graced by the moon. With Franco Holder on piano, this evening of musical enchantment features classic songs of Berlin and American theater, including "Mack the Knife," "Surabaya Johnny," and "September Song."
Kurt Weill was a German-born composer who began writing for theater in the 1920s during the rise of fascism and then fled to America where he found success writing for Broadway. His provocative songs live on the spectrum between classical art song, jazz, and musical theater, with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, Langston Hughes, and other poetic luminaries.
Since 2006, Mistress Ginger has been bringing her cabaret magic to a variety of Twin Cities venues, from the Bryant-Lake Bowl to the Ordway Center, with musical collaborators including Rick Carlson, Lori Dokken, and George Maurer. With a passion for storytelling through song, she takes her audiences on whimsical journeys full of heart and imagination. Her cookbook, Mistress Ginger Cooks, was published in 2014, and she hosts a live video series, Mistress Ginger & Friends.
Franco Holder (pianist) is a freelance pianist in the Twin Cities. He has performed with the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra and at such venues as the Schubert Club, Baroque Room, and O'Shaughnessy Auditorium. Franco also enjoys musical theater and has worked as a vocal coach and accompanist for both the Guthrie and Ordway theaters. He is a past winner of the Artistic Ambassadors Competition and regularly performs with the MNKINO Film Festival Orchestra, which brings together filmmakers, composers, and musicians in collaboration to create new short films and original scores, performed live.
