Presented and Hosted by Leah Peterson Sisler
Featuring Lee E. Frelich, Ph.D.
Researcher and Director, The University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology

"There's this invention that takes carbon out of the air and sequesters it and can do it on a massive scale. It's friendly to people -- anybody can use it. It was invented 300 million years ago, and it's called a tree." - Lee Frelich on Minnesota Public Radio

Professor Frelich makes a return appearance to Cafe Scientifique to discuss the possibility of curbing climate change with a global Trillion Tree Movement. Current science suggests that mass tree plantings might be one of the most attainable, effective, and cheapest climate solutions available -- but urgent action is required. Learn more about the underlying science, and how Minnesota's forests are already impacted by our warming climate.

Lee E. Frelich is Director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology. Frelich has authored more than 160 publications and is listed among the top 1% of all scientists in the world in the Thompson-Reuters Web of Science (Ecology and Environment Category). His research has been featured in the news media over 450 times, including The New York Times, Newsweek, CBS Radio Osgood Files, and National Geographic. Frelich has provided consulting services on forest management for the U.S. Army, Air Force, National Forest Service, National Park Service, and Departments of Natural Resources in several states. Current research interests include large-scale fire and wind, earthworm invasion, effects of deer and moose browsing, and climate change.

Cafe Scientifique combines cutting-edge science and conversation in a fun, casual cabaret setting, often over dinner and a beer (or two). Throughout Café Scientifique's eight-year residency at the Bryant-Lake Bowl, theatergoers have regularly packed the room to hear talks on topics ranging from dinosaurs to exoplanets to the inner workings of the human brain. Every month, Café Scientifique offers an opportunity for anyone to engage with incredible scientists and researchers in an informal, accessible way.
