Founded in 1985 by Artistic Director Jan Bartoszek, the
critically-acclaimed Hedwig Dances has inspired audiences
with bold performances and innovative collaborations.
Hedwig Dances is unique in the way it integrates theatrical
narratives with thematic elements such as history,
motherhood, memory and forms of personal and collective
identity. Bartoszek uses projected images, sculptural
artifacts, dolls and masks, together with signature dance
movements to stimulate the soul and the imagination.
In 1992 Hedwig Dances was selected for the prestigious
position of Dance Company in Residence at the historic
Chicago Cultural Center. In the past decade, Hedwig
Dances has proudly shared the Cultural Center's dedication
to performance, education and innovative new ways of
bridging cultural difference.
Hedwig Dances creates worlds of magical beauty with
graceful choreography, masterly gestures, and haunting
musical scores. At once lighthearted and passionate, the
dances nurture a sense of the circular nature of
experience, of place and customs, and the commonality of
all people.
