Sweet Darkness
Earthly Tongues (preview) is a full company work and the first installment of an ambitious new work that will premiere in 2009 on the theme of family and memory. Jan Bartoszek has been described as a movement pioneer who has incorporated global-historical elements into her bottomless repertoire (New City) and the Chicago Reader describes her work as poignantly human. Living in Squares, Going round in Circles (premiere) is a male solo for company member Justin Deschamps choreographed by Kirsty Mackellar that explores the idea of surveillance on an individual in order to create order and obedience. This work marks Ms. Mackellars debut as a choreographer.

The evening includes two current works, Night Blooming Jasmine and Rein, Bellow. Night Blooming Jasmine is a riveting fusion of original dance and music that Chicago Tribune dance critic, Lucia Mauro, described as a meditative journey through the sensual corridors of nightfall. The dance traverses the polarity between tension and release in a dream-like setting, alternately evoking grueling endurance and a calm, sensual respite. Created in an episodic structure, the dance is enhanced by a richly layered original score created by vocalist Carol Genetti and costumes by Tatyana Martyanova. Rein, Bellow holds a strange beauty. A theatrical work of potent images, the dance is composed as a fractured series of honed, variegated vignettes that sets six dancers in complex partnerships in an intimate, yet otherworldly, landscape. Design elements for Rein, Bellow include an original score by composer Philip Hamilton and set/costume designs by Young and Thomas.
