(canceled) MARCELO FROTA (MOMO) in concert at Foundry Hall
Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Frota's music reassembles different sounds and styles with his natural approach to Brazilian popular music. He is compared to underground folk artists from Northern Brazil, such as Marconi Notaro, Lula Cortez and Alceu Valenca. Recently, Marcelo Frota was featured on Caetano Velosos's 70th birthday compilation with Os Mutantes, Seu Jorge, Beck, Devendran Banhart, and Céu, and others. (www.harmonipan.com/momo/)
Marcelo Frota's relationship with music started early when he was 13 years old and got his first guitar. He spent his childhood in Angola, Africa; his teenage years in the United States (as a foreign exchange student at South Haven High School) and, as a young adult, he spent time in the Spanish city of Barcelona. This cultural mix brought different flavors to Marcelo's music.
His work now reassembles different pieces of Brazilian music, giving him a natural approach to folk music. Marcelo Frota's inspiration comes from a variety of backgrounds: from the French songs of Charles Aznavour and Cheval Fou, to old samba from his childhood years, and little-known Brazilian artists including Belchior, Sérgio Sampaio and Clube da Esquina, from his native State of Minas Gerais. His work has been in many ways associated with underground folk artists from Northern Brazil, such as Marconi Notaro, Lula Cortez and Zé Ramalho and Alceu Valença.
