Juana, by Carla Lucero (Lucero and Gaspar de Alba)

Proof of COVID Vaccines required by the venue.

Our August Festival features JUANA by Carla Lucero and Alica Gaspar de Alba, sung in Spanish with English supertitles.  All productions are offered with orchestra at the wheelchair-accessible Nagelberg Theatre in Baruch Performing Arts Center at 55 Lexington Avenue (24th Street).

In the words of Stage Director Rod Gomez:
"A modern look at a unique but timeless story of an exceptional historical figure, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. Born in the mid 1600s in what today we know as Mexico (then still, New Spain), this poet, intellectual, philosopher, dramatist - Hieronymite nun - becomes the first published feminist of the New World, the first literary woman in the Americas, and arguably, the first great Latin American poet. This pioneering Hispana/Latina/Chicana icon was condemned and persecuted by the male hierarchy of the Catholic Church and the Spanish Inquisitions colonial tentacles we understand why scholars today call her protofeminist, and we bear witness to the dear cost of her quest for learning."

The first 2 rows of the theatre are designated as Premium Seating. All other tickets are General Admission.

If you require any special assistance getting into the theatre, please be sure to email the venue box office at:
