The Sound Mind Collective: PR Workshop for Independent Musicians
The Sound Mind Collective Presents:
PR Workshop for Independent Artists

Every independent musician stands to benefit from good PR, but it doesn't always make sense to risk spending thousands of dollars on a publicist that may or may not get good results.

While connections and nepotism will always be a part of the music business, there is also a set of tangible skills behind running a successful PR campaign, which anyone can learn. By developing these skills, good publicity can be far more accessible to independent artists than we might imagine.

The Sound Mind Collective has enlisted Will Bradford (SeepeopleS) and SMC's own Katherine Powell to shine a light on how NYC musicians can empower themselves to set up great publicity for their record release or tour on the DIY tip.

The workshop will cover the following topics & more:

- Writing & Formatting a Press Release for a show, tour, record,
etc.
- Etiquette for sending press release & following up
- Strategies for researching and acquiring the proper contacts
Including tips and tools for keeping them organized and up to date
- Overall strategy for running a successful PR campaign for yourself or your band.
- Tools for tracking your campaign

Attendees will walk away with example press Releases & one Sheets, step by step reference materials for running your own PR campaign, organizational tools for contacts, and tools to track and maximize the effectiveness of your campaign.

Best known as the lead singer for the band SeepeopleS and bassist for theWorst, Will has released numerous albums with his bands and has produced countless other artists. He was the former chief publicist for Macro-Management and Harmonized Records and has worked with such artists as Big Boi (Outkast), Disco Biscuits, Lotus, Hot Buttered Rum and Nils Lofgren to name a short few. He has handled publicity for music festivals like Floydfest, Bear Creek Music Festival, and Trinumeral Festival and for promoters and talent buyers like AC Entertainment (Bonnaroo) and the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, NC. While living in Asheville, NC he owned and ran a full service recording studio (BooDub) and has produced, engineered, and collaborated with artists such as Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Break Science, The Nth Power, Barefoot Manner and Lotus. Currently, he works as talent buyer and publicist for Portland Empire and Bayside Bowl in Portland, ME and as an engineer and producer at Chillhouse Studios in Boston, MA.

Over a 15-year career in the music business Katherine Powell (KP) has performed many roles from manager, booking agent, publicist, business manager, venue owner / manager, talent buyer, and promoter to production manager, tour manager, stage hand, and backline tech. She has been taught by both experience and amazing mentors and has remained on the side of industry independents throughout her career.
In her role as artist manager, she focuses simultaneously on career development and execution of vision while creating and maintaining a strong and sustainable business infrastructure. Her work is rooted in the goal to help artists with the difficult balance of creating while maintaining a working business model without compromising the strength and integrity of their vision and voice. KP currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and manages The Payback, Inc 501(c)(3) with Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds) and is a partner in Color Red, a record label and studio based in Denver, CO.
