Ode to Joy: A Choral Celebration
Ode to Joy: A Choral Celebration First Church Berkeley invites the entire community to an evening of singing and celebrating choral music on Saturday, August 23, 2014. From 6:30-8;15 pm, join a sing-in of parts of Vivaldi's Gloria (RV 589) under the direction of First Church Director of Music Derek Tam. At 8:30 pm you are invited to an exclusive screening of the moving and powerful film "Following the Ninth:In the Footsteps of Beethoven's Final Symphony." The event will benefit First Church's music ministry. "Following the Ninth" traces of the power of this work to transcend cultural and political barriers: Chilean demonstrators sang the triumphant "Ode to Joy" during the Pinochet dictatorship, a Chinese student organizer broadcast it at Tiananmen Square and an East Berliner heard the concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein after the Wall was dismantled. Vivaldi's Gloria is his most famous choral work. Peter Carey describes the masterpiece this way: "The wonderfully sunny nature of the Gloria, with its distinctive melodies and rhythms, is characteristic of all of Vivaldi's music, giving it an immediate and universal appeal." If you participate in the sing-in, you are also invited to sing parts of this work in the worship service the following day, Sunday, August 24 at 10:00 am. Derek Tam, Director of Music at First Church, is a conductor and historical keyboardist. As a conductor, he has worked with the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra, the Star Valley Children's Choir and Symphony Napa Valley. As a harpsichordist and fortepianist, he plays regularly with many professional ensembles in the Bay Area and beyond. This evening event will take place in the First Church Sanctuary, one of the premier classical music venues in the East Bay. First Church has a strong commitment to music of all kindsorgan, choral, instrumental, a cappella, popular, jazz, and more. The church is located at 2345 Channing Way, at Dana, near the UC Berkeley Campus. Tickets are $22 for the whole evening, $15 for the sing-in only and $10 for the film showing only. A limited number of scores are available for sale at $5. If you don't purchase a score, please bring your own. Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets and at the door. There is a paid parking lot adjacent to the church as well as street parking.
