Salya and Satiawati
The North American premiere of the original dance drama is based on the tragic Mahabharata story of Salya and Satiawati.
Synopsis: Salya was the commander-in-chief of the Kurawa army in their great war against their relatives, the Pandawas. Salya predicts his own death in a fight against Yudistira, the eldest of the five Pandawa brothers. Salya's wife, Satiawati, overhears the prediction and, distressed, draws a dagger to kill herself. Salya stops her, speaking sweet words of comfort. The couple retires to their bedroom to make love. Before Satiawati falls asleep, she ties the end of Salya's hip cloth around her body so that she will know if he tries to sneak out for battle.
Early in the morning, Salya cuts the cloth, releasing himself from Satiawati's clever ruse. He quickly meets his death in battle at the hands of Yudistira. Satiawati arrives on the battlefield, the cut cloth still tied to her body. Grief-stricken, she kills herself over her dead husband's body.
Appearance by exceptional guest dancers and musicians from Bali. Anak Agung Anom Putra, Ayu Sukmawati and I Ketut Cater.
