Movie Club: Jazz on a Summer's Day
Movie Club is a screening series that showcases films with a bold musical component, be it the score or subject matter. With sound being such a crucial aspect of the Movie Club experience, the event is hosted at a private DIY loft space decked out with an impressive audiophile speaker system.
Kicking off the series is a screening of Bert Stern's Jazz On A Summer's Day, distributed by Kino Lorber. This documentary chronicles a special moment in jazz history, a portrait of the 1958 edition of the Newport Jazz Festival rendered in glorious texture and color. Just four years into the festival's history, it was already presenting iconic acts such as Thelonious Monk, Anita O'Day, Louis Armstrong, and Mahalia Jackson. The New Yorker's Richard Brody notes that "[s]everal of the performances are among the treasures of filmed music; all of them, whatever their musical merit, are filmed with a rare artistry, a rare attention to making images of music that are themselves musical."
It is truly a stunning gem of a film and were excited to share it with you all at Movie Club on Thursday, July 21.
Due to limited capacity, advance tickets will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. The exact Greenpoint location will be shared with ticket holders in the confirmation email.
