The Joan A. Backman Memorial Concert|
The early-to-mid-twentieth century in America was a fertile creative era for Yiddish music and klezmer. This concert by two of the twenty-first century's most forward-looking young visionaries looks back to that era for repertoire and inspiration. Michael Winograd and his band will re-create the fascinating 1956 collaboration between Dave Tarras and his son-in-law, Sam Muziker, called TANZ! Overlooked in its time, TANZ! presented a sophisticated, modern jazz-infused klezmer. Socalled likewise has grown increasingly fascinated by the songs coming out of Yiddish musical theater and Yiddish radio hits of that era. Backed by Winograd's ace band, Socalled will explore this rich vein of Yiddish cultural history, giving it his ineffable twenty-first century twist.
