Elaine Kreston, David Rhodes & John Malkin in Concert
Cellist Elaine Kreston, pianist/keyboardist David Rhodes, and percussionist/pianist John Malkin are teaming up to create a transportive musical experience at the Pacific Cultural Center in Santa Cruz.
This music could be considered a soundtrack for life in all its dimensions - spiritual, material, sacred, profane, subtle, gross - beyond opposites, the wholeness of life.
The program will include some striking original compositions and arrangements, as well as improvisations on modal themes, on a variety of instruments. Among other instruments, John will play the halo drum to create some otherworldly sonic textures.
Cellist Elaine Kreston has performed throughout the USA and Europe, including Carnegie's Recital Hall, as soloist on Broadway, with pop and rock stars, and has been featured in broadcasts on NPR and KPFA.
Her talents are diverse: a founding member of the classical Maybeck Trio, she also performs in RumiCello: a collaboration that beautifully mingles the poetry of Rumi with the sounds of the cello. Blending her background of classical music with improvisation, she has performed as soloist at the events of Krishna Das, Adyashanti, and Eckhart Tolle.
As a recording artist, Elaine adds her mellow tones to the albums of singer-songwriters, movie scores, and has released a cd with TranslucenT.
John Malkin is a pianist/percussionist who has created music for dance, film and concerts. John performs solo piano concerts and has collaborated with a variety of musicians and artists including Paul Sprawl and Christian Kesten (Berlin). Last year he played a solo piano concert in Mallorca, Spain. John has created music for many choreographers and dancers including Frey Faust, Mel Wong, Tandy Beal, Stephanie Spencer and others
David Rhodes is a composer, arranger, and performer, who draws on his classical piano training, work with classical, jazz, fusion, rock and folk groups, study of world music traditions at SJSU, the bhakti of kirtan and the ecstasy of zhikr. India's spiritual traditions and music have been a deep and abiding source of inspiration for him.
David's recordings include the critically acclaimed "Traces of Eden," "Fluid Days," "Moonbirds" and "Elaine Kreston and David Rhodes Live." His acoustic palette includes piano, harmonium, synthesizer, zithers, voice and percussion. David is a composer for film, video and theater production, most recently for "The Freedom Stories of Lala", with playwright and actress Rivera Sun.
