Criollo Clasico Trio at TreeCat Cafe
The New Criollo Clasico Trio from Puerto Rico is one of the most eclectic Caribbean musical ensembles touring today. Unique and equally versatile in Latin, classical and jazz idioms, its members are virtuoso performers.
Jose Gonzalez, guitarist, composer and leader of the trio, is one of Puerto Rico's premier musicians and a virtuoso with Puerto Ricos national instrument, the cuatro. Gonzales has recorded 17 CDs and has performed hundreds of concerts with his own ensembles and major Latin artists. He has also served as music director for some of Puerto Rico's top artists (Giovanni Hidalgo, Danny Rivera, El Topo, Roy Brown). Gonzales has participated as an invited artist with the Hartford and Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestras as well as the Bronx Arts Ensemble, New Jersey Chamber Music Society, Heineken Jazz Jam Series and the World Guitar Festival, among many others. He is a featured artist on four Putumayo World Music compilations
Ahmed Gonzalez plays the flute, percussion and guitar, and studied classical flute with Smith College flute instructor and Julliard graduate, Sue Kurian. His dedication to Jazz and Latin music have led him to perform and record with many top artists. His debut CD "Flute Soul" is now a certified bestseller and he can be heard on WEIB Smooth Jazz Radio where he has charted three of his songs. Equally versatile in Latin, Jazz, Classical, Rock and World Music, his beautiful, expressive tone and impressive improvisational skills have made him much in demand.
Rene Gonzalez, Latin percussionist and bass guitarist, is one of the most versatile musicians on the Latin music scene today. He studied music at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and has developed an impressive technique and knowledge of Afro-Cuban and world music. He has studied and performed with world masters of percussion Giovanni Hidalgo, Paoili Mejias, Trilok Gurtu and Steve Berrios and is skilled at playing the congas, bongos, timbales, drum set, cajon, and bata drums.
The TreeCat Café is a monthly cafe and performance venue run by youth of the Treehouse Community, a unique inter-generational community designed to support families who are fostering and adopting children from the foster care system. The TreeCat Café provides high school and college-aged youth at Treehouse with work experience and training in business skills. Youth take on and manage every aspect of the Café: marketing, accounting, fundraising, cooking and hosting. Local business owners and elders of the Treehouse Community offer their expertise and mentor youth in entrepreneurial skills.
Admission is $20 for general public and $5 for Treehouse community members. Funds will help to fund the TreeCat Café and other youth programs at Treehouse. Food will be served.
