One Degree of Separation
ONE DEGREE OF SEPARATION

Manhattan Girls Chorus

Concert at Bohemian National Hall

May 18, 2016, 7:00 PM

Manhattan Girls Chorus is delighted to present "One Degree of Separation," an evening honoring esteemed Hungarian philanthropist and activist, Dr. Eva Haller.

The evening will include the girls performing Béla Bartók's Hungarian Folk Songs, woven with a modern dance interpretation by Nadine Bommer, and the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with an extraordinarily gifted quartet. These traditional folk songs are rarely performed and provide a magical insight into the timeless human condition. Bartók captures human connection and the power of music to celebrate, to offset the pain of existence during troubled times and to heal. Though written in a turbulent Eastern Europe between the World Wars, they are still highly relevant to our modern lives from the delightfully mundane, to love and loss and the enduring nature of the human spirit. The connection of souls persists through time and separation.

In the words of Dr. Haller, "We have a responsibility to change six degrees of separation to one degree - we are a little drop in the ocean, but if we keep connecting people to people with similar interests and the same energy, we create many drops - we create waves." This performance celebrates community, perseverance and love, which are reflected in the mission of the Manhattan Girls Chorus: Empowering Young Women to Find Their Voice.

Manhattan Girls Chorus was founded in 2011 by Michelle Oesterle and has performed several times at Carnegie Hall, was featured at Women in the World Summit, and has quickly emerged as a powerful voice for young women and the arts.
