Music of the Levant: Old & New, with the extraordinary duo "Pulse"
The Minnesota Global Arts Institute, in collaboration with Hamline University, is thrilled to host a series of events with world-class composer, lyricist and songwriter Issa Boulos, along with special appearances by fellow composer and musician Wanees Zarour. Their concert, Music of the Levant: Old & New, with the Extraordinary Duo Pulse, will be held at Sundin Music Hall on Friday, March 11 at 7:30pm.
Issa Boulos is an international award-winning Palestinian-American composer, lyricist and songwriter. Born in Jerusalem in 1968, Boulos studied piano, 'ud and voice at an early age and later pursued music composition in the U.S. where he studied with Gustavo Leone, Robert Lombardo, Athanasios Zervas and Ilya Levinson. Throughout his career, Boulos has sought to use traditional instruments in innovative ways, composing music for full orchestra, chamber, mixed ensembles and traditional ensemble (takht). Among his commissions are pieces for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Silk Road Ensemble, and original scores for award-winning documentaries, plays, feature films and musicals.
Wanees Zarour was born in Ramallah, Palestine, where he began to study Middle Eastern and Western music at age 7. His compositions and work involve traditional instrumentation and unique arrangements, with an emphasis on the classical Maqam system unique to the Middle East; he also specializes in playing the buzuq. He is the director of the Middle East Music Ensemble at the University of Chicago, and travels throughout the country and the world both performing and teaching
The concert featuring these two exceptional artists will be held at Sundin Music Hall, Hamline University, 1531 Hewitt Avenue, Saint Paul, MN on Friday, March 11 at 7:30pm. Tickets are by general admission, $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for the Hamline/ACTC community. Seating is limited, and advance tickets are available through this site or by calling 651-523-2459. Free parking is widely available in campus lots.
