Ancestral Memories II
A dance concert 'for looking back & moving forward' featuring the work of choreographers, Kevin LaMarr Jones and Fatima Logan. July 13-15, 2012 at Dogtown Dance Theatre in Richmond, Virginia. Don't miss it!
IT TAKES A LANGUAGE, choreographed by Kevin LaMarr Jones, is a coming-of-age, theatrical dance journey with global sensibilities. Through the media of dance, imagination and laughter, IT TAKES A LANGUAGE calls upon familiar images to provide a snapshot of the human experience, featuring music with African roots from Guatemala, Brazil, Cuba and the United States. IT TAKES A LANGUAGE honors the contributions of strength and spirit, rhythm and rhyme, power and perseverance that people of African descent have made and continue to make around the world.
Harlem-based choreographer, Fatima Logan, returns to Richmond with her company, VashtiDance Theater, to present DOWN TO THE RIVER, a ballet inspired by the Fable of the Pearl from the Apocryphal Acts of the Apostle Thomas that summarizes the "Gnostic Call," to awaken from the dream life into Self or God Realization. Fusing movement from both contemporary Western and traditional African disciplines, DOWN TO THE RIVER explores the journey to self-realization through struggle, surrender, and victory, communicated through song, an original score, and movement that is fluid, explosive, and invigorating. DOWN TO THE RIVER, is about confronting our obstacles, leaving behind what holds us back, and unveiling our true nature that is nothing less than divine.
