Event
Drum & Dance of Haiti
The Minnesota Global Arts Institute and Hamline University continue their focus on our neighbors to the south, bringing the music and dance of Haiti's carnival to Saint Paul September 26 and 27. This is the first time that the acclaimed Afoutayi Dance and Drum Company's national Haitian Cultural Festival will be presented in Minnesota, after well-received performances in California, across the US, and of course in Haiti.
In Lakansyèl, a Haitian Creole word for rainbow, Afoutayi presents the stories of Haiti through her artistic traditions and the sharing of the rainbow of individuals, artist, healers, warriors and spirits who originated and continue to create the history and culture of Haiti.
The Afoutayi company includes a number of acclaimed Haitian artists (see attached bio sheet), including: Artistic Director and Choreographer Djenane Saint Juste, Florencia Pierre -"Fofo" (an accomplished dancer, choreographer, singer, actress and educator, and also a Mambo - a Priestess in the Vodou religion), Music Director Jeff Pierre, youth representative Hassen Ortega, dancers Jean Dominique Denis, Jimmy Diligent and Linda Isabelle François, singer Fabienne Denis, storyteller Paula C. Pean, and designer Marie Lucia Cadet "Malou." For the events at Hamline University the ensemble will be joined in performance by local musicians Taji Maalik, Marc Anderson, Tim O'Keefe, Stephen Spaise, and David Rich. Dance students from Hamline's Theater and Dance Department will be training in the traditional dance and will participate in the performance, as will fifth grade students from the Hamline Elementary School.
The main concert for The Music and Dance of Haiti will be held at Sundin Music Hall, Hamline University, 1531 Hewitt Avenue, Saint Paul, MN on Saturday, September 26 at 7:30 (free, informative pre-show lecture-demonstration at 7:00). Tickets are by general admission, $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for the Hamline/ACTC community. Seating is limited, and advance tickets are available through http://musicofhaiti.bpt.me or by calling 651-523-2459. Free parking is widely available in campus lots.
