WnMC House Concert Series: Bossa Zuzu
Created in 2014, with the intent of connecting musicians with fans in an intimate setting, the WNMC House Concert series is proud to present Boss Zuzu.
About the artists: Bossa Zuzu is a neo-Bossa Nova group from Los Angeles that is reviving the classic Bossa Nova sound for the 21st Century. They seamlessly blend the aesthetic of Getz/Gilberto with influences of other Brazilian music such as forró, Afoxé and Brazilian popular music as well as American jazz and jop music.
Bossa Zuzu is named after the late Dona Zuzu, who ran a restaurant Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. Aconchego da Zuzu ("Cozy of Zuzu") lies hidden in a residential neighborhood and serves traditional Bahian food while hosting live Bossa Nova, Samba and Choro music. Some customers enjoy a four-course meal with their family, some share a few beers with friends, while others listen, sing and dance along with the music. Inside this restaurant, everyone is treated like family. Strangers pull their tables together, the servers sing along with the music, and Zuzu used to come out from her house to dance the samba until she died at the ripe age of 103.
Bossa Zuzu's sound is warm, light and intimate. Memorable melodies, subtly complex harmonies, deep grooves, creative arrangements, and an array of musical colors are the characteristics that make Bossa Zuzu captivating, whether in a small café or on a festival stage.
Bossa Zuzu was formed in 2011 when Dan Reckard came back from Bahia, Brazil and teamed up with Capital in Los Angeles. After two years of performing all over Southern California, from jazz clubs such as the Blue Whale and Vitello's, to rock venues, restaurants, coffee shops and bookstores; they played a two week, eight city tour of Japan. Their debut CD "Bossa Zuzu" came out in 2012 and has received radio airplay in the U.S. and Japan, and recordings have been featured in short films including "Next Sunrise" and "Are There Women on Kepler?" More recently, Bossa Zuzu toured as the opener for American Idol's Crystal Bowersox on her December and January tours of California.
Their new album, "Under Leaves Under Sky," produced by jazz legend Peter Erskine, brings together diverse musicians who are masters of Brazilian music. Each contributed their own artistry, performing original tunes inspired by Bossa Nova and fresh interpretations of the classics. The result is an organic musical concoction steeped in deep grooves, warm harmonies, and catchy melodies.
