 The Stage Company was founded in 1982 by a small but enthusiastic group of individuals who wanted to bring community theater to Southern Illinois. Over the years it has grown to become recognized as the area's premier regional theater group. It now produces four full-length plays each season, plus several pre-season and post-season events. Its home venue is the East Theater in the newly renovated, historic Varsity Theater (now the Varsity Center for the Arts) in the heart of downtown Carbondale.
