Founded in 1988, Kathy Mata Ballet is one of the few dance companies in the country to provide talented adult dancers from non-dance professions with the opportunity to train and perform. The company dancers, all of whom rehearse at least four times a week on top of their professional working day, come from a variety of careers including accounting, engineering, law, and scientific research. Unlike most dance companies, all Kathy Mata Ballet performances benefit community charities or are offered free of charge. Bringing dance to deserving community audiences is one of the group's main goals. The company regularly performs at places like the Sequoias Senior Living Center and the Castro Senior Center, among others. We also have been involved for several years in performing in the Spring Dance Inspiration show at the Cowell Theater, which has raised tens of thousands of dollars for brain tumor research and treatment. In addition, we offer regular studio performances and donate the proceeds to the Alonzo King LINES Dance Center, our rehearsal home. This emphasis on community service is one of the greatest joys of the company.
