Song of Singapore
Imagine this: You're in a nightclub in Singapore in 1941 nd there's a hep swing band playing. Rose, the singer with the band, really belts 'em out. She is a bit ditzy, suffering from a pretty extreme case of amnesia. The plot gets crazier as it goes, including stolen jewels and a corrupt police inspector.
The script was written by Athens resident Paula Lockheart and three friends in the 80's. It has played in London, New York, Cleveland, San Francisco, etc, but never before in Athens. Now it is coming to The Southeastern Ohio History Center in Athens, Ohio on March 3,4,5 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 6 at 2:30 pm.
Song Of Singapore is a collaborative production brought to Athens by Actors Moveable Theater, The Southeastern Ohio History Center and a producers' team composed of Carol Patterson, David Burke, Stephen Kropf, Mimi Hart and Paula Lockheart, and directed by David Tadlock with Michael Tobar as Musical Director.
The wonderful cast all have Athens connections. Anna Caldwell will return to Athens from her current home in Chicago to play the role of Rose; Michael Tobar, beloved Athens musician and retired teacher (in Marietta) to play Freddy, the band leader and pianist; Ken Dean will be at the drums and play the role of Spike; Tom Quinn returns to the Athens Community theater scene as Hans; Dayton Willison, recently returned to Athens and will play Kurlan; Julia Kelley, a music therapy/vocal performance graduate student at Ohio U. rounds out the cast as Chah Li.
