(Dean Stevens)
Luis Enrique Mejia, and his equally legendary brother, Carlos, were the soundtrack to the struggle against Nicaragua's US-backed dictator, Anastasio Somoza, whose brutal dynasty ruled that country from 1936 to 1979, then was overthrown in a struggle that galvanized the continent, a triumph that spoke to the power of people led by artists, priests and visionaries to bring about change in the world. It has been often said that the triumph of the Nicaraguan Revolution was achieved more through the moral power of the artistic vision of the Godoy Brothers, and the poetry of the recently deceased Ernesto Cardenal, than through armed struggle or military strategy. The power to galvanize an entire people with song is the embodiment of the work of these remarkable brothers.
I remember Luis Enrique and Carlos when they were in exile in Costa Rica during the late '70s, singing what came to be known as "Nueva Cancion", a new voice of freedom and struggle for a new continent to emerge from the ashes. It spoke of the condition of the campesino, the abject peonage of the coffee plantation peasants, the injustice of US imperialism in so many countries of the region.
Throughout the succession of decades and changes of government and regimes, Luis Enrique Mejeia's songs continue to shine a light, through the beauty of song and words on the people's struggle to finally achieve a true equality, democracy, peace.
