Vertical Player Repertory (VPR) welcomes the period instrument ensemble Anima to the miniatures behind the door 2019 Salon Series for Anima Mundi: The Cosmos Shimmers.
From the musical proportions of the Soul of the World, to the cosmic disorder caused by love and the senses, Anima reflects on the mystic harmonies of body and soul, both universal and all-too-human. With 17th-century music from England, France, Spain, and Italy, and readings paraphrased from Plato's Timaeus by Vita Wallace, this program suggests that though the soul of the universe (Anima Mundi) is invisible, it is not imperceptible -- it may even be in some sense audible.

About Anima
Anima specializes in music of the Baroque and late Renaissance for voice, violin, and harp-based continuo. The group features soprano Beth Anne Hatton, Baroque violinist Vita Wallace, viola da gambist and lirone player Motomi Igarashi, and harpist Christa Patton. As individuals, these artists have performed and recorded with period instrument ensembles throughout the eastern US as well as internationally. Anima has been presented by the Historical Huguenot Society in New Paltz, New York, the American Foundation of Savoy Orders, Zürcher Gallery, King Manor, Gotham Early Music Scene, and The Stone, John Zorn's New York City experimental music venue, among others. In 2016, the group toured Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee with concerts and educational programs. In broadcast media, it has been featured on Ebru TV's Rhythm and Roots series, on Niji Iro Gene, a Japanese news and entertainment TV program, and on Robert Aubry Davis's syndicated radio program Millennium of Music. Anima has worked together since 2005, and this deep-rooted collaboration has enabled the group to explore the mysteries of the music, and make it come alive in intimate and engaging concerts. Anima brings the music and culture of the 17th Century into focus for today's listeners, making virtuosity approachable playful, highly expressive and provocative.
About Vertical Player Repertory
A pioneer of the alternative opera movement in New York City, Vertical Player Repertory creates ensemble-driven opera theatre in extraordinary venues. Founded in 1998 in a Brooklyn storefront, VPR's unconventional spirit has informed an eclectic mix of repertoire from the 17th to the 21st centuries, including Puccini's Il Tabarro on an oil tanker in the last active shipping port in Brooklyn, Cavalli's La Calisto in a factory courtyard on the Gowanus Canal, and Yoav Gal's tragi-comic opera The Dwarf in a maze-like raw space in midtown Manhattan. The ongoing performance series "miniatures behind the door" offers vocal recitals, instrumental concerts and theater in VPR's storefront, Behind the Door, described by The New York Times as one of the most intimate spaces for opera in all New York. Vertical Player Repertory is a founding member of the New York Opera Alliance.
VPR is a proud participant in the fourth annual New York Opera Fest, joining over 30 New York City-based companies putting on over 30 events in venues around the city in May and June.
