Laurie Sargent returns to The Lizard Lounge tonight to celebrate the release of her newest CD "Smiley Face" for two shows. Brett Milano writes, "a first- rate pop singer, who can turn a melody or a chorus hook into a real thing of beauty. Such moments are all over this album, whether its the noir-country sound of Still the Sky, the soaring and emotive Come Home or the flat-out rocker Last Man Standing.

Laurie Sargent has worn many hats in her life.
Bona fide pop/rock star - she was lead singer of the Boston based band Face-to-Face in the 80s, (garnering a Top 40 single), then worked with producer Russ Titelman on a solo album in 1996. From 2000-2003 she sang with the band Orchestra Morphine, then formed the critically acclaimed Twinemen with Morphine members Billy Conway and Dana Colley.

Farmer - She moved to Montana in 2008 to raise organic produce, keep a farm filled with horses, dogs and ducks, leaving the touring life behind.

Volunteer Firefighter  it gets pretty dry in Montana in the summer.

Rock and roll singer/songwriter  In 2015, Laurie hit the road with Johnette Napolitano to tour some new songs and reconnect with audiences that had missed her voice.

And now  she finds herself cutting back on the garden to release her new album Smiley Face on October 20th. Laurie will be opening shows for Jeffrey Foucault on the eastern seaboard October 4-14; Chris Smither in early December, and doing solo shows in the Northeast starting in November.

Laurie speaks of this shift, I have been making music for lifetimes, but walked away from the business of music several years ago. Songs kept threading through my heart and head however, bubbling up at every opportunity as I plied my new chosen trade as a farmer- the rhythm of the hoe, the counting of the fresh, vibrant fruits of labor, the steady footfalls of my horse as I rode in the vast openness of my new western home. These things became the new record, Smiley Face.

Recorded in Boston and featuring long time musical partners Billy Conway, Jeremy Curtis, Ian Kennedy, Evan Harriman, and David Westner, this collection of songs has already garnered critical praise. Ted Drozdowski, Senior editor of Premier Guitar says of Smiley Face, Shimmering guitars turn rural America into a study in light and shadow. Tales caught in memory become multi-faceted reflections of truth in the retelling. And the joy of life remains a wide open channel, even in death. Her ear for texture creates a vivid sonic panorama. And through every song, Sargents bold, rich voice frames each detail. Its the albums soaring or subtle psyche. She wields it like a perfectly hued brush in the hands of an absolute master. The emoji title is smartly deceptive. Whats behind that smile are deep, beautiful secretswonderfully revealed.

Longtime music critic, writer (and award winning editor of Women Walk the Line) Holly Gleason offers, Laurie Sargent writes with an acute humanity -- and those soul incisions carve up taught, evocative arrangements. It takes a woman who's lived fearlessly, loved endlessly and stays present to create rock & roll no matter what kind of music she's making.

Brett Milano (Boston music critic/writer) adds, You couldnt ask for a more grabbing opener than Laurie Sargents new album. Stupid Wish finds the singer in a confessional mood, asking what happens when the wrong dreams come true. With Smiley Face the guitars kick in at full throttle, and she demands music and celebration in the afterlife. So
weve gone from confiding regrets to laughing at death, and thats only the first two songs. But dont get the impression that this is tough going. Sargent is above all a first- rate pop singer, who can turn a melody or a chorus hook into a real thing of beauty. Such moments are all over this album, whether its the noir-country sound of Still the Sky, the soaring and emotive Come Home or the flat-out rocker Last Man Standing. If youve followed her career over the years youve heard how much ground shes covered, from early chart success with Face to Face, to the post-Morphine low-rocking Twinemen, to a rewarding string of solo albums. With this one she brings all those threads together. One of my favorite tracks is Back in the Day, a sly putdown of rock & roll types who never got over their long-ago heyday. Point well taken: Theres no need to live in the past when youre doing your best work right now.

Laurie and her partner Billy Conway have toured over the years with Americana Roots artist Jeffrey Foucault, and their shows together have a natural ease that come from knowing someone for years. Foucault says of her, Laurie Sargent plays a Fender Mustang tuned to an open chord through an old Supro amp, and thats her whole rig, unless you count her voice, an instrument that can heal the sick or take the paint off the walls, just as she likes. In a career that's included stints fronting famous rock bands, stunt-singing for Diane Lane in an ill-starred feature film, running an organic farm, keeping horses, training dogs, fighting fires, and painting pictures, Laurie just started performing solo for the first time a few years ago. She's whip-smart and funny as hell, an uncanny writer and performer with a natural connection to the dark fire of life.

Laurie Sargents collaborations with both the musicians and photographer Audrey Hall have led to an extremely personal and authentic release. In the cover photograph, she appears in a still life that was accomplished over several hours, surrounded by the tools of her trade: farm implements, beloved pets, garden bounty, mud boots, and a straw hat while she reclines writing in a journal -wearing a couture gown. Its clear the multicolored threads of Laurie Sargents life have helped create Smiley Face. Shes even designed her own humorous first video from the new album  the emoji filled Back in the Day. https://youtu.be/2l7Ch18SoAY
