Introducing her first self-produced show, bob, emerging choreographer and film-maker, Ashlyn Fletcher delves into the myth of responsibility through dance, theater and film as described by Raoul Martinez in his new book Creating Freedom. As she considers the concept of choice to be invalid due to what award-winning documentarian and visual artist Martinez calls the lottery of birth, she uses the belief as a tool to construct worlds and build narratives that comment on the theory and leave room for questioning. With this as a driving idea, the work itself is abstract and absurd. Directing her cast of nine, she utilizes voice and movement equally, while constantly enforcing abrupt shifts in dynamic and mood. Using bold colored paint to cover the entirety of her dancers bodies, Fletcher tries to amplify the inflated self-awareness an individual might experience mirrored with their pertinence to the whole of existence. Bob is humorous, unpredictable, and enlightening.
