Grey Alone (Cutting Edge, Freak-Soul)
in the oaken cellar of Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3, the standout of this viewer's CMJ experience was seen: Grey Mcmurray. Enveloped in a low red light and aided by a trio of deft musicians (including a cellist), the Brooklyn-based artist played a kind of freak-soul as he dipped down into often uncomfortable yet sometimes inviting visions of spirituality and love, his drooping guitar and cavernous voice simultaneously chilling and moving the listener. Antony Hegarty and Nick Hakim are probably his musical siblings but McMurray conjured a creepily warm aura in Rockwood's downstairs room that is perhaps his own.

the sublimely odd Grey Mcmurray
- The Approval Matrix, New York Magazine
Mr. Mcmurrays reedy croon in particular, lent a relatable aspect to an otherwise pleasurably inscrutable evening of ambient washes and elemental bashes.
- Steve Smith, The New York Times
Artists like Grey Mcmurray are at the cutting edge of new music composition and performance.
- Stephen Eddins, AllMusic Review
"If it was weird to be thinking Fripp and Eno's debut studio album No Pussyfooting, with Nico-in-good-form as the surprise extra, it started to make more sense with each new song It came with Mcmurray whose other telling contribution was with half-disembodied/half metallic backing vocals swirling, probing, one minute pin-pointed, the next blurry."
- Bernard Zuel, The Sydney Morning Herald
"McMurray found beauty and elegance... building a joyously Enoesque, clear-sky gleam"
- New York Music Daily
"In Stuart Bogie and Grey McMurrays The Watchmaker, you feel the melodic lines of Cello Suite No. 3 hum, swell and steep within the electric guitar. The Bach creates a three-dimensional space for the songs deep, muffled beats and sweeping vocals to live."

the worlds least obtrusive guitarist

Grey Mcmurray, whose effortlessly lyrical high tenor can easily lead anyone to imagine So Percussion is really Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers goofing off.
