Rhythmic Uprising Screening with TranscenDANCE at Centro Cultural de la Raza
Join us for an evening in the vibrant world of the performing arts. Live performances from TranscenDANCE and Centro Cultural de la Raza music & dance projects will open the recently-launched documentary Rhythmic Uprising, a film that shows how Afro-Brazilian cultural arts change lives in Bahia, Brazil. After the film, the filmmakers will join San Diego cultural arts leaders in a dialogue about the role of the arts in youth development.
FILM SYNOPSIS: Rhythmic Uprising is a documentary that shows how vibrant Afro-Brazilian performing arts are used to fight racism, social exclusion, and poverty in Bahia, Brazil. The film outlines the transformative powers of a large movement of community cultural projects that make up the latest chapter in a creative struggle for racial equality that began four centuries ago. Concepts of citizenship considered in this hour-long film include capoeira, candombl, blocos afros, theater, circus, and quilombos.
transcenDANCE DESCRIPTION: transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project empowers culturally diverse, City Heights neighborhood youth to mobilize social change through Performance Arts based community-building, leadership, and service. transcenDANCE is defined as 1: the method by which youth, empowered by the arts, will overcome the negative and restrictive aspects that threaten their community via performances marked by surpassing qualities of diligence, passion, creativity, thoughtful reflection, and care 2: arts for the purpose of social change 3: a San Diego-based non-profit that provides professional training in dance, choreography, creative writing, and theatre to multi-cultural, inner-city youth in San Diego, with the firm belief that the arts can be an effective vehicle for mobilizing and empowering people to work for social change in their communities.
