31st New London Maritime Society Annual Meeting
Port N' Starboard, Ocean Beach
New London, CT
Share this event:

New London Maritime Society has had a whale of a 31st year.
Let's Celebrate at Ocean Beach's Port 'N Starboard.

We're having chowda', hors 'oeuvres, and cake --a perfect Sunday lunch. The meeting will be short, the food delicious, the entertainment enjoyable!

Entertainment is by the traditional folk duo of John Roberts and Debra Cowan.
"...Debra Cowan and John Roberts reminded me of why I love folk music so much--it's the ripping yarns, the sparse tunes, and the joy of singing along."
Rob Weir, Off-Center Views

With their eloquent voices and expert musicianship, John Roberts and Debra Cowan bring to life songs seldom heard on TV or radio these days. Drawn from both the folk tradition and the work of contemporary songwriters, many of these songs tell of the timeless joys and sorrows of human experience. They offer windows into where we've come from and perhaps where we're headed. Both John and Debra can spin a ripping good yarn and whether illuminating, inspiring, or laugh-out-loud funny, their stories convey their love of the songs and the people who've sung them over the years, decades - and in some cases centuries.

Retired mathematics professor William LaRoue will receive a special MVP award at the event. Bill began volunteering at the Custom House as the assistant to founding director Lucile Showalter. Bill LaRoue has become an indispensable presence at the museum. He is a master storyteller and expert guide to the collections.

At the event, the Maritime Society also will salute the approximately 100 volunteers from the local Carpenters and Painters Unions, who donated their time and expertise to help restore New London Harbor Lighthouse.

We have a lot to be grateful for, let's celebrate together.
The meeting's early November date is a nod to both the 253rd anniversary of the first lighting of New London Harbor Light on November 7, 1761, and the first lighting of New London Ledge Light 105 years ago on November 10, 1909. New London Maritime Society received ownership of Harbor Light in 2010, of New London Ledge in 2014, and of Race Rock Light in 2013. Race Rock Light station was first lit 135 years ago on January 1, 1879.
