PSSO Fall Concert "Transformations"
Hi folks. I just wanted to let you know what the program will be for this upcoming season. I'm super excited about the great music we're playing and hope you will be, too! =) This year, we're taking a depature from the formal "Symphony". Instead, we'll explore the wonderful world of suites and tone poems as follows: Fall "Transformations" 11/18/07: Weber Turandot Overture Hinemith Symphonic Metamorphosis -Intermission- Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture Strauss Death and Transfiguration This fall concert contains two "Transformation" pieces, along with shorter works by composers who influenced these two composers. The Turandot in particular contains one of the core themes that Hindemith uses in the Metamorphosis. And the Strauss...well, it's just marvelous.
Winter "Fairy Tales" 3/10/07: Mozart Magic Flute Overture Prokofiev Violin Concerto #1 (Nelly Kim soloist) -Intermission- Rimsky-Korsakov Russian Easter Overture Stravinsky Firebird (1919) The Winter concert, we welcome Nelly Kim as our soloist. She's a good friend of the Shens and grew up playing in the Tacoma Youth Symphony. Well, she kept going with it and is now a fabulous violinist in the New York City Ballet. The Mozart is a fitting prelude into the Prokofiev, given how much the latter composer appreciated classical form. In the second half, we'll play two super duper fun pieces. And of course, there's a relationship. Stravinsky actually studied under Rimsky-Korsakov during the time when he wrote the "Fireworks" student piece which triggered the commissioning of the Firebird ballet score. Spring "American Heritage" 5/19/07 David Diamond's Rounds for String Orchestra Scott Selfon's Original Composition -Intermission- Copland Tender Land Suite Our final concert of the season features an all American program...indeed an all Jewish-American program. I thought it'd be fun to program another strings only piece, since we haven't done that in a while. Next is Scott Selfon's original composition, which has yet to be named. After intermission, we'll close with Copland's luscious Tender Land Suite.
