Axemen Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Fundraiser 2014
It's our 4th year, honoring past Axemen athletes, inspiring current student-athletes and raising money to support South Eugene High School.
Join us for a reception & silent auction beginning at 6:00pm, and induction dinner at 7:30 at the Valley River Inn, September 27th, 2014. Single tickets here $65 each, or at the school main office along with Table Sponsorships for $1,000 for 8 seats.
Inductees 2014 Golf -- Jack Mattison '58 Jack was the 1957 State Champion, was 3rd in 1958, and was named to the All-State team in both years. The South team finished 2nd and 4th in those years. He played 3 years of varsity golf at OSU and then New Mexico, winning a small intercollegiate tournament in 1962, and he played in 2 NCAA tournaments. Jack was a National Honor Society member at South, earned a law degree from the U of O School of Law in 1968, and retired in 2002 after serving 22 years as a District and Circuit Court Judge in Lane County. He and his wife, and classmate, Kay have two sons who are third generation Axemen graduates, both of whom were excellent athletes.
Athlete -- Sue Moe '64 Field Hockey, Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field, Softball: Sue participated in 6 sports for all 3 years at South during the pre-Title IX days through GAA (field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, badminton, and track & field), and excelled in all. She was also in the National Honor Society. Sue then went on to participate in field hockey, softball, track and field, and basketball at the University of Oregon for 4 years in each sport. During her years at UO and later, Sue also played for very successful state softball and field hockey teams, participating in 5 national tournaments (3 in softball; 2 in field hockey). Sue was active in the science community as a high school teacher, earning awards and serving in positions of leadership.
Athlete & Coach -- John Gillespie '64 Track & Field and Cross Country Coach 1977-'82 and again 1998-'04: John was on Varsity track, National Honor Society and Captain of Debate Team while at South Eugene, before returning to coach nine state championship teams, 4 teams to 2nd place and 3 teams to 4th place in the state in Cross Country and Track & Field. Johns 1981 Track & Field Team (also being inducted in 2014) set the still-standing state meet scoring record with 100 points. John coached two National High School records, both still records today: Jeff Hess, 3000 Steeplechase 1979, and 4 x 1500 relay (Kimball, Mason, Chambers, McGuirk) 1982. John also served as an Assistant Coach 1975 and 2004.
Athlete -- James Wathey '66 Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field: Jim earned 8 Varsity letters in Football, Basketball, Baseball/Track and Field. He received all-district recognition in football and basketball while winning the state shot put title and finishing second in the discus his senior year. Jim was an excellent student and attended the UO on a football scholarship, played 4 years, and signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys. He started a landscape maintenance business in the Portland and Seattle areas with a UO team mate, and is now retired and lives in Portland.
1981 Men's Track Team: Won State Championship with record 100 points (still record today) Named Top Dual Meet team in Oregon high school track history by "Who's Who In Oregon Track" (still ranked #1 today) Undefeated in all meets in 1981 including dual meet with Berkeley High School, the 1980 and 1981 California State Champions State Records: Four (200 400 4x100R 4x400R) School Records: Eight (100 200 400 300IH 4x100R 4x400R HJ Disc) Nine members and one relay are still ranked in state top ten of their event Most members of the team were part of three state championships as SE won State titles in 1979 and 1980 and also in 1982 and 1983

Athlete -- Katie Swank '95 Basketball, Volleyball, Track & Field: Katie started for South as a freshman in basketball, was first team All-League as a junior and league MVP her senior year, leading South to the League championship and the final four at State. She earned 11 varsity letters by also participating in Volleyball and Track and Field. She earned a basketball scholarship to Santa Clara University and played four years while completing her degree. She has since become an emergency room physician at River Bend Hospital in Springfield, a triathlete, and is married with two children.
Soccer and Track & Field -- Nick Leonard '03 : Nick was a three year varsity soccer starter. He was Honorable Mention All League his sophomore year. As a junior he was the team's leading scorer, the team's Offensive Player of the Year, the team co-MVP, and a First Team All League pick. His senior year was the team co-Captain, led the league in scoring, was the team Offensive Player or the Year and the team MVP. He was the Midwestern League Player of the Year, First Team All League and First Team All-State. He lettered in track as an 800 meter runner his senior year. Nick attended Cornell University and the University of San Diego and played soccer at each school. On returning to Eugene, he was an Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at SEHS 2007-'10.
