Event: Introduction, premiere screening of film Breakthrough Weekend, Q + A after screening, director in attendance
"Breakthrough Weekend by Brooklyn-based indie writer/director Sujewa Ekanayake is very funny, exceedingly interesting & entertaining. It's amazing that the hilarious 'spiritual' advice offered in core scenes actually transcends itself, supplying effective solutions to our (often stuck) modern lives!" Filmmaker/Author Rick Schmidt (http://www.fandor.com/filmmakers/director-rick-schmidt-1739)
"Unlike many mainstream comedies today where the director has a very plain visual style, Ekanayake utilizes bold colors, quick zooms and slow motion shots as part of his visual grammar. The script (also written by Ekanayake) covers a wide range of topics from the mumblecore film movement to a pair of crazy siblings to a showdown between a film writer and a wizard. The film is a world of its own." - Devon Narine-Singh, 24/7 Cinema (http://dnsreviews.tumblr.com/post/84750639364/breakthrough-weekend-review)
Breakthrough Weekend by writer/director Sujewa Ekanayake is a comedy about a New York City private detective named Sal Vulpes (Damien Bosco). Sal often offers his own brand of amusing philosophical advice to his clients & or pretty much anyone who would listen. The story takes place during one working weekend for the detective. Sal is aided on this weekend by Yevgeny (Sean Bempong) - a depressed aspiring writer. During the weekend Sal & Yevgeny travel to meet various clients in Manhattan & Brooklyn, & carry out their work on several cases - including dealing with a suspicious girlfriend (Jennifer Blakemore), a young couple with a dark secret (Clara Schmidt, Matthew R. Carney), and a wizard (David A. Steinberg). In between work on their cases Sal and Yevgeny discuss and debate aspects of Yevgeny's on going search for happiness and attempts to become a better individual. Breakthrough Weekend is a beautifully filmed celebration of the unusual, colorful spirit of New York City.
