Women Songwriters in the Round: Summer House Concert Series: June
Women Songwriters in the Round: House Concert Series: June
In the spirit of fostering Portland's community of brilliant creators of song, Women Songwriters in the Round is a monthly concert series whose mission is to gather, promote, and share the "crème de la crème" of Pacific Northwest female songwriters with an ever-expanding, supportive and appreciative listening audience.
For the summer, our series will be held in private homes in the Portland Metro Area. Seating is limited to 25 guests.
House concerts provide the perfect listening environment, where the audience is free to converse with the musician, ask questions, and learn more about the music. Audience members get the best performance for their money, without the distractions of background noise, cigarette smoke and poker machines.
Wine, beer, other beverages, hors d'doeuvres will be available for a small suggested donation.
Artist lineup for June: Mel Kubik Tracy Klas Nicole Campbell

Mel Kubik:
Inspirationista, Muse-Wrangler, Singer of Stories, Writer of Songs, Ivory-Tickler, Sax Empress, Host of the Women Songwriter in the Round series at Shaker and Vine.
This ubiquitous Pacific NW singer-songwriter, pianist, saxophonist, producer and composer is a rare combination of sass and sensitivity. Stylistically, she easily walks through walls and establishes herself solidly in ANY genre she chooses.
Her melodies are set in any style that the lyric is calling for, be it sultry southern rock, early jazz, goth, country, ambient, or something you'd expect to hear in a French cafe. Her voice captures your imagination and permeates your inner world long into the night after you've stopped listening. This is a journey worth taking.
Though she has lent her innumerable talents and skills to countless others, and she remains a member of 80's pop band, Quarterflash, she is offering her newest SOLO venture under her OWN name, showcasing her artistry as songwriter, singer, pianist/multi-instrumentalist, storyteller, and consumate entertainer...occasionally collaborating with masterful guitarist and pedal steel player, Christopher Woitach.
She currently has 3 CDs in her personal discography, "Pigeon," her first and critically acclaimed solo CD (on Swallowhard Records), "Jungle Nights" with the Shanghai Woolies (on American Gavabun Records), and her current new release "Naked Songs" (for Screamin Tornado Music).
Mel has produced CDs for NW artists Nicole Campbell ("Little Voice") and Donna Jose ("On The Road With Buddah's Cat"), and co-composed "Kinji Suite" with native American artist, Arlie Neskahi for the Third Angle New Music Ensemble. You hear her voice regularly on the air on commercials for "Goodwill" and "Subway," among others.
Her long and strong collaboration as composer and pianist with Marv Ross (of Quarterflash fame) landed her PAMTA awards for Best Original Score and Best Musical Theater Director for her work on the critically acclaimed musical, "Ghosts of Celilo".
Tracy Klas:
Tracy Klas has performed and opened with well known artists such as, Sheryl Crow , 4 non blondes, and Vonda Sheppard, just to name a few. A main stage draw for many festivals throughout the North West, she has received at least 10 songwriting and performance awards, and has been seen at many top venues. In addition, her songs have been placed in major and independent films. Tracy Klas is a BMI member.
Tracy's voice is unforgettable beauty with edge - gets to your head, under your skin and into your heart with powerful vocals and touching lyric, often solo with just her mother's "vintage" Guild guitar.
She is reminiscent of the old school vocal power and integrity of Grace Slick, Robert Plant and Pat Benatar, mixed with the new and honest textures of Norah Jones, Alanis Morrisette and Edwin MaCain. Incredibly eclectic vocals Tracy brings vocal Dynamics back to the world of linear pop. Combine that with her own unique, musical giftedness, mainstream accessibility, and her ability to write a great hook, you have a fresh yet familiar sound. Tracy Klas also Plays with a 4 piece backing band which really show cases her raw emotional energy and talent.
Tracy Klas is a "must see" live, that is where you feel the presence and charisma of her artistry drop right into your heart.
"She could sing the names out of the phone book and hold an audience still leaving them wanting more!" - Steve Miller Band, bass player, Lonnie Turner.
"Tracy is unforgettable beauty with an edge, simply a true and stunning talent" --Tommy Tutone - "
Nicole Campbell:
Nicole Campbell was born to sing. Her powerful voice, captivating in its sincerity, and steeped in emotion, sends the listener deep into the source of the moment. From the opening strains of one of her songs, it's evident that Nicole Campbell is unafraid to wear her heart on her sleeve.
Nicole has 3 full length CD's to her credit and has worked with such musical talents as Keith Schreiner (Dalia, Stephanie Schneiderman), Tony Lash (Heatmiser, Dandy Warhols, Eric Matthews) and engineer Jeff Saltzman (Sunset Valley, King Black Acid), Campbell has channeled her influences wisely to create a dulcet blend of emotionally unsparing rock and introspective musical explorations. She has opened for such nationals as Joan Osborne, Beth Orton, Shawn Mullins, Matthew Sweet and more.
Campbell performs from solo to full band. Her performances are powerful and her presence is undeniable. Her musical prowess and versatility offer a wide range of emotional and musical content. Campbell's performances give the usual cynics far more than they deserve and the true believers just what they need. Her charming stage presence has caused her to become well known in certain circles for tempering her glowing rock with raucous wit and superb musicianship. In fact, 4 out of 5 audience members agree that they have left Campbell's live performances feeling considerably better than when they arrived.
