Xara Youth Ensemble: FREE AS THE WIND
Xara Youth Ensemble (XYE) will premiere their new performance piece, Free as the Wind, on Saturday, June 7th. Based on the book of the same name by ecologist and author Jamie Bastedo, Halifax artist Susan Tooke and set in 1960s Nova Scotia, Free as the Wind is a story of nature, activism, and the power of one person to make a difference.

When the Canadian government decides to auction off wild Sable Island horses, many of them destined to be dog food, Canadian children write letters pleading with politicians to save them. Free as the Wind follows several young women as they rally their communities to take action and free the horses. Bastedo and Tooke's story will be interwoven with beautiful choral music, choreography, and lighting to create a new adaptation of this story of strength, beauty, and change.

The premiere will take place at Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave, Halifax NS at 7:30 PM. In addition, Free as the Wind will be touring across Nova Scotia, as part of a "double-bill" with the Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble (XCTE) show Waiting on the Eastern Line. Performances will take place on June 8th at Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre, June 13th at The Astor Theatre in Liverpool, and June 28th at King's Theatre in Annapolis Royal. Tour tickets should be purchased directly from each theatre.

Xara Youth Ensemble (XYE) is designed for girls aged 14-18 (grades 9-12), and provides multi-faceted training in choral singing, theatre, and movement. Directed by Christina Murray and Claire Leger of the award-winning Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble (XCTE), XYE is an opportunity for girls to develop their performing skills in a positive, inclusive environment. In addition, XYE singers will work with three mentors from Xara Choral Theatre throughout the process who will share their experience and training in choral theatre with the younger singers.

XYE is generously supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture, and Heritage.
