"My inspiration for creating Dub Champions Festival nearly four years ago in New York City was primarily the result of my experience performing at Dub Mission and seeing the amazing response of the crowd week after week to these events that DJ Sep was organizing. I felt we needed something like that in New York for both artists and fans of the music. Once it started it just snowballed from there." Emch / Subatomic Sound System

After three years in the North East and two years in Europe, Subatomic Sound in conjunction with Dub Mission (S.F.), Dub Club (L.A.), and Dubspot presents the First Annual Dub Champions Festival on the West Coast. An international musical phenomenon, dub is a musical style characterized by heavy bass, drums, and copious use of effects, where the producer becomes the artist, with the mixing board as his or her instrument. The festival features performances and educational workshops to exhibit how the music is created and how it has evolved from its roots in '70s Jamaica to become a cornerstone of electronic bass music. Dub is a major inspiration to artists in many genres including rap, rock, punk and dance music. Dub Champions Festival was founded in New York City by Emch of Subatomic Sound System and is dedicated to featuring the world's greatest dub pioneers from Jamaica as well as current innovators on every Continent. The festival happens in New York City, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Vienna, Amsterdam and now debuts in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Hopeton Overton Brown--better known as the Scientist---is a protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock), one of the originators of dub music. Brown was introduced to electronics by his father, who worked as a television and radio repair technician. He began building his own amplifiers while still very young and would often buy transformers from Tubby's Dromilly Road studio. He kept asking Tubby to give him a chance at mixing and was taken on at Tubby's as an assistant.
He began working as a mixer in the mid-1970s, initially creating dubs of reworked Studio One riddims for Don Mais' Roots Tradition label. His name originated from a joke between Tubby and Bunny Lee. Having noticed Brown's forward- thinking ideas and technical aspirations, Tubby remarked, "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist." He left King Tubby's studio at the end of the '70s and became the principal engineer for Channel One Studio, where he had the chance to work on a
16-track mixing desk (rather than the four-track desk at Tubby's). The Scientist was the favorite engineer of Henry
"Junjo" Lawes, and also did a lot of work for Linval Thompson and Jah Thomas. He gained more prominence in the early 80's when he released a series of memorable albums on Greensleeves Records with titles themed around Scientist's fictional achievements in fighting Space Invaders, Pac-Men, and Vampires, and winning the World Cup. The music on these albums was played by Roots Radics, his most frequent collaborators. In 1982, the Scientist left Channel One to work at Tuff Gong studio as second engineer to Errol Brown. He immigrated to the Washington, D.C. area in 1985 and in the early 90's moved to Los Angeles where he continues to produce prolifically and design his own studio equipment.
