Event
Georgian London (with a private concert at Handel House)
This day explores the ever changing and turbulent first half of the 18th century. Starting in the Foundling Museum we will pay tribute to Thomas Coram, the philanthropic old sea-dog who was the beating heart behind the Foundling Hospital. Designed for unwanted or orphaned children, the hospital was sponsored by the great satirist of Georgian every-day life William Hogarth, and the famous German composer George Frederic Handel. The museum now is a memorial to these men, to the 25,000 children they helped save and to the aggressive nature of 18th century London. After lunch we will visit Hanover Square the first of the three great Mayfair squares and the John James church of St George's. The success of this complex paved the way for the huge West End building boom of the early 1720s. Nearby at 25 Brook Street, Handel spent the last 36 years of his life. Here we will be given a private harpsichord concert in his own concert room. We will have time to explore this wonderfully nostalgic house and its beautifully restored Georgian interiors. Lunch will be held at Vinoteca, Beak Street in Soho. It will cost £20 per head (not included in the price) to include a glass of wine, mixed starters, a main course, coffee or tea and service. Please let Rose know if you will NOT be joining for lunch.
