KAVI
Annelize Machado & Maraa Dance Theatre present Kavi, a performance featuring Contemporary dance & Hindustani Vocals
Machado's choreography is driven by her desire to express bhakti (devotion) in its simplest form, action. The work is inspired by the writings of Indian saints and poets, such as Purandaradasa, Andal, and Muktabai, to name a few. These devotional writings charge the classical and contemporary dancing bodies in the space.
Beautifully textured, the show weaves together live Classical singing, non-traditional music, and elements of Western Contemporary & Indian classical forms such as Bharata Natyam and Kathak. Kavi presents an unconventional answer to how the essence of classical art might be expressed in contemporary performance.
