AIAOC Lunch Hour Webinar: City of Irvine Cool Pavements Initiative in Carbon Reduction
Course Description:

Rising temperatures will add an estimated $19B in pavement repairs every year from now through 2040. Why? The majority of our roads are asphalt pavements, which absorb and break down because of heat. Yet, asphalt pavements are still cost-effective, recyclable, flexible pavements and a better alternative to carbon intensive and costly concrete pavements.

Through practical examples initiated by the City of Irvine, this presentation will challenge conventional practices and offer a forward-looking view of how roads can transition from being vulnerabilities to assets in the fight for climate resilience. This presentation will also highlight some challenges that municipalities face in adopting newer technology in the decision-making framework that drives capital improvement project funding.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will learn about the urban heat island effect, its implications on communities and individuals and how the City of Irvine has outlined various solutions to help mitigate urban heat.
2. Attendees will learn about the primary drivers for asphalt pavement deterioration, current municipality practices to mitigate them, and learn how Irvines initiative studied the interrelation between performance and sustainability goals for roads and pavement.
3.Attendees will learn how Irvine examined how material innovations, such as solar reflective pavement coatings and how this technology and intervention reduces surface level heat and subsequent air temperatures throughout a 24-hour cycle, can improve the sustainability and performance of roads through real-world case studies.
4.Attendees will learn about some of the critical factors that can drive public policies and investments in sustainable practices within local municipalities.
