On Friday 17 October 2014 at St Alban's Church, Holborn, Vasari Singers under Jeremy Backhouse, will give the world premiere performance of a new 60-minute a cappella work entitled Under the shadow of His wing by Jonathan Rathbone. For the choir this is a great opportunity to continue its commitment to commissioning new works from British composers, and develops further Vasari Singers relationship with Backhouse, a composer whose works it has performed in concert many times.

Under the shadow of His wing is conceived as a live aural experience -  something between a concert and a service. It is written for a large acoustic and utilises several different areas of a church. The choir starts and finishes at the back in the gloom and during the performance gradually moves all around the church enveloping the audience with music, which swirls all around them. The piece has been written to incorporate the inevitable time lag between distant choirs. Words are taken from the services of Compline and Evensong, and other poems and hymns connected with night-time and sleep. The work will be performed in semi-darkness.

Under the shadow of His wing consists of 16 individual movements, linked together thematically via the use of plainsong with an overarching theme of a musical journey from darkness to light. The selected texts are a mixture of Latin and English.  The central core of the work will be the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. The movements are:

v  Te lucis ante terminum
v  Now that the sun has veiled its light
v  Jesu salvator
v  Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis
v  O nata lux
v  Close thine eyes
v  Christe qui lux
v  In pace
v  Blessed is the man
v  Glory to thee my God this night
v  Care charming sleep
v  Into thy hands
v  Hail gladdening light
v  Te lucis and Amens
v  Abide with me

The 16 movements are composed for voices with a range of technical abilities, featuring a variety of part allocations, and are designed so that they may also be suitable for stand-alone performance. In addition, the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis will be eminently suitable for use during Choral Evensong. These considerations will enable many different sorts of choir to sing the music, and for the movements to be used in a wide range of performance situations.

Under the shadow of His wing continues Vasari Singers commitment to contemporary music. With a reputation for seeking out new and challenging modern repertoire, the choir regularly commissions and premieres works, and has made many notable world premiere recordings. Since 2000, the choir has commissioned more than 25 new works with Under the shadow of His Wing being number 26.  The work will be recorded on Naxos in February 2015.

Vasari Singers, founded over 30 years ago under Jeremy Backhouse, is among the most enterprising amateur chamber choirs in Britain, performing regularly in London and cathedrals across England with repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary. Vasari's extensive and acclaimed discography reflects the choir's versatility and quality, and showcases its unique choral sound, whether singing a cappella or accompanied. In 2001 the choir recorded Jonathan Rathbone's sacred anthem 'When David Heard' and in 2003 his sacred motet 'Corpus Christi'. More recently, the choir recorded three of his Christmas arrangements: 'Gabriel's Message', 'I believe in Father Christmas' and his Carol Medley. For more information go to www.vasarisingers.org
