About the performers:

Tomomi Sakamoto:

Tomomi Sakamoto has been establishing herself as a concert violinist and pedagogue of international scope. Tomomi began learning the violin at 3 years old in her native Japan. Her initial studies took place with her mother before continuing with violinists Toshiko Katayama and Takaya Urakawa. As early as age 9, she won first place in the AOCC Overseas Dispatch Competition enabling her to give commemorative concerts in Belgium and the Czech Republic. Tomomi has since won the STV Prize in the STV Youth Music Contest, as well as prizes in the Mainichi Competition, Japan Performers' Competition, and the Asahikawa New Music Award. Her undergraduate studies took place at the Tokyo College of Music working with violinist Yoko Seto after which she moved to the UK to further her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London studying under Mayumi Fujikawa. Upon completion of a Post Graduate Diploma in violin performance in 2007, she was invited for solo collaborations with the Asahikawa Philharmonic Orchestra, most notably in performances of Tchaikovskys Violin Concerto in 2008 and Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherazade in 2016.

Alongside passionate devotion to solo and chamber music performance, Tomomi has been a dedicated teacher to students of all ages, many of whom have themselves become recipients of competition awards. She has been a faculty member at the Shinonome Toyosu Music School in Tokyo. She has taken part in numerous music seminars both in Japan and internationally, including most notably the France Musicalta Summer International Music Academy and the Asahikawa Vienna International Violin Seminar. Tomomi currently resides in White Plains, New York with her family.

Oliver Markson:

Oliver Markson is acclaimed internationally as a concert pianist, composer and lecturer. With engagements to date in the UK, Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil, Europe, Thailand and the United States, recent notable performances include the Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1, Grieg Concerto and Beethoven Triple Concerto in Mexico City; solo recitals in New York and Shanghai; vocal recitals with sopranos Monica Harte, Nina Berman and Kristi Bryson; and violin/piano recitals with Mayumi Fujikawa in England and Japan, leading to CD releases under the Japanese label Mittenwald in 2009 and 2011. Oliver Marksons compositions often reflect his European/Japanese roots blending French Impressionism with traditional Japanese elements. His Hymn for String Orchestra (2020) is scheduled to be recorded in Cadogan Hall, London as part of an album for the recording label Toccata Classics, while his song cycle Unforgotten (2022) setting poems by Roger Scruton is to be premiered at a symposium in Ralston College in 2024.

Oliver Markson has been a faculty member at the Bronx Community College CUNY for eleven years giving classes consisting of music history, music theory and music philosophy as well as piano classes. Since 2018, he has returned to Japan annually as a judge in the Tokyo Piano Competition, in which he also gives public piano masterclasses.

Oliver Marksons piano studies have taken place under the instruction of Douglas Finch, Tatiana Sarkissova, Marc Silverman, Ursula Oppens, Gerald Robbins and Bernard Flavigny. He received his undergraduate degree from the Royal Academy of Music, his Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music, and his doctoral degree from the Graduate Center CUNY. His doctoral dissertation on the compositional technique of Nikolai Medtner was supervised by musicologist Richard Kramer.
