SJFF - Poto Mitan and Up the Ridge
"Poto Mitan" Dirs: Renee Bergan and Mark Schuller. 2009. Told through the lives of five compelling Hatian women, Poto Mitan gives an inside perspective on globalization, Haitis current crisis, and the resilient women challenging this system.
"Up the Ridge" Dirs: Nick Szuberla and Amelia Kirby. 2006. In 1999 Nick Szuberla and Amanda Kirby were volunteer DJs for the Appalachian regions only hip-hop radio program in Whitesburg, KY when they received hundreds of letters from inmates transferred into nearby Wallens Ridge, the regions newest prison built to prop up the shrinking coal economy. The letters described human rights violations and racial tension between staff and inmates. The film provides in-depth look at the United States prison industry and the social impact of moving hundreds of thousands of inner-city minority offenders to distant rural outposts.
