Lunar New Year ~ Bless This Space
Bless this space between us with music!
Along the Silk Road, Chaikhanas (teahouses) sprang up in Central Asia and became a meeting ground for the travellers from distant lands. Tonight we create an ephemeral teahouse to welcome the new lunar year and bless the space with music.
Musicians:
Shams93 is the brainchild of composer/performer Brian Redfern. Brian graduated from CalArts in 1998, having studied composition with Nyoman Wenten, Kobla Ladzepko and Wadada Leo Smith. In 2005 Brian switched from guitar to the ancient middle eastern instrument, the oud, studying with virtuoso Yuval Ron. Brian plays both acoustic and electric oud and uses the ancient system of "Maqam music" from the middle east to compose new material based on ancient patterns.
Ustad Morelock is a founding member of the Los Angeles-area music agglomerate The Hop-Frog Kollectiv. Through various incarnations the group has placed emphasis on a gritty experimental style with Eastern mystical influence. After more than a decade of hosting live music gatherings around LA and in the Mojave Desert, the Ustad hosts the weekly live music program Dung Mummy Radio on killradio.org. With his currently active bands Deglet Noor Fakirs and Daylight Bats the Ustad weaves droning guitar patterns and colors of fuzz and glitchy MIDI guitar tones with the intensity and spirit of Sufi chants or gamelan.
Mike Penny is the American Shamisen Player who single-handedly attempted to revive the ancient practice of kadozuke in Santa Clarita valley. He can take the shamisen on a musical journey from Tennessee Waltz to Japanese Romanian hiphop to shreddding out an incredible version of "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns-n-Roses! In a nod to The Year of the Horse, may he grace the space with Chinese composition "Horse Races" on shamisen!
