Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter 2023 (PROGRAMME 07)
Miss (SCR/DIR Amira Géhanne Khalfallah, MOROCCO, 2019, color, 12:41. Drama). A spin-off of a feature film that touches on the French nuclear experiments in Algeria.

Late Night (SCR/DIR Tiago Araújo, PORTUGAL/NETHERLANDS, 2021, animation, 06:00. Music Video). Ping lives in a confined space and subhuman conditions, which becomes a nightmarish realm of despair and hopelessness. Later, he realizes how it reflects his own state of mind. Ghost Echo is the brainchild of Dutch musicians Remy de Wal and Karel Witte. Combining their love for atmospheric synth/guitar sounds with triphop-like beats and ethereal vocal layering, it  can best be described as Cinematic Electro-Prog. Influences include Steven Wilson, A Perfect Circle, Katatonia, Massive Attack, and the soundtracks to both Blade Runner movies.

The Cave  (SCR/DIR Kim Jinman/Chon Jiyoung, SOUTH KOREA, 2022, color, 13:00. Animation, drama.) A boy longs for his fathers affection, who only cares about fishing. When his father dies of illness, he becomes obsessed with his belongings. In an imaginary cave, he curses the kin who took his fathers bike and rods and gets revenge, but the curse eats at his soul. Inspired by the director's childhood memories of his father. (In Korean, with English subtitles. NYC Premiere)

***

Transparency (SCR/DIR Mark Cabaroy. USA, 2019, 05:00. Drama.) One morning Flor wakes up seeing what she believes is a ghost.

The Sirens Scream  (SCR/DIR Aleksandra Niemczyk, Graeme Cole. NORWAY/BOSNIA, 2021, color, 29:23. Drama). A girl with a disability, or rather a superpower that makes her dangerous to herself and others, is left by her biological mother at a window of mercy and soon adopted by the vicious queen of a society that exploits females and violates their reproduction rights. Disgusted by her stepmother, who forces a half-woman half-bird creature to lay eggs on demand, Meia rebels to save a friend and destroy the cruel dictatorship. (In French with English subtitles. US premiere)

***

Sutak (SCR/DIR Tushar Waghela, INDIA, 2021, color, 02:24). Sutak means the time of impurity. It is an Indian ritual for certain time periods believed to be impure, such as during death, birth, an eclipse and any auspicious activity when gathering is forbidden. The Covid-19 coronavirus is also a sutak to this Earth. The filmmaker is under lockdown for 21 days. This film is shot on mobile camera from home and windows.
