Katie McMahon: Music & Dance of Ireland
Our series concludes with the music and dance traditions of Ireland, featuring famed soprano Katie McMahon (Voice and Irish Harp) and a host of tuneful Irish musicians including McKnight award-winning musician Karen Mueller (Band Leader, Autoharp, Guitar & Bouzouki), AJ Srubas: (fiddle); Wolf Loescher (bodhran), Jenny Russ (backing vocals) and featuring the The Corda Mor Irish Dancers.
Hot on the heels of St. Patrick's Day, Riverdance star Katie McMahon brings a more personal style of Irish music to Sundin Music Hall on Friday, March 21 at 7:30pm. This concert is a rare chance to experience traditional Irish music and dance in an intimate concert setting.
Katie McMahon is probably best known for her exquisite soaring soprano solo in the original Riverdance single, which topped the charts in Ireland for three months and with which Katie toured the world for over five years as the lead vocalist. Her voice was described by the Irish Times as "poetry, perfection and purity." However, in her earlier life Katie, a born and bred Dubliner, trained in traditional Irish harp and singing with renowned traditional Irish harpist Máirín Ní Shé. She also studied Italian and Drama Studies in Trinity College. During a break from her studies, Katie joined the vocal group Anuna, specializing in ancient and traditional Irish music, and became their featured soloist on their first two CDs.
Since making her home in Minnesota, Katie has chosen to return to her roots, forming her own band and troupe of Irish dancers and continuing her studies and research into Irish music, dance, and instruments. This concert delves deeper into the Irish musical tradition, and as part of that Katie will present a free pre-show talk at 7:00pm.
