Il Moro - The Moor
Bronx, New York. October 20, 2022.  This Wednesday November 2nd, Bronx World Film and Cinema on the Sound present the Bronx premiere of award-winning short Il Moro - The Moor, a period piece written and directed by Daphne Di Cinto about the rise to power in the 1500s of Alessandro de Medici, Medici dynasty heir born from the out-of-wedlock union between Pope Clement VII and an African slave. Alessandro became the first Duke of Florence. The film comes to The Bronx after its New York City premiere October 28th at Urbanworld Film Festival.

Alessandro de Medici has mostly been overlooked in historical chronicles. While he lies in a tomb in a prestigious chapel, resting place of many Medici men, his tomb does not report his name. Director Di Cinto tells us he was always considered less than, described as uneducated, unrefined and ugly when compared to his cousin Ippolito. While today its related to skin color, back then it was about his low birth, yet it still has the same name: discrimination. Recently, however, the research of international scholars has corroborated his African ancestry, which has also been highlighted in an exhibition at the Uffizi Museum in Florence and by prestigious publications including Black Africans in Renaissance Europe (Cambridge University Press).

Il Moro marks the directorial debut for Daphne Di Cinto, a screenwriter, director, actor and producer of African and Italian descent, distinguished alumni of New York Citys Actors Studio Drama School and recipient of the Cultured Focus Visionary in Film Award at the 79th Venice Film Festival. Veteran Italian actor Paolo Sassanelli (Pope Clement VII) and lead Alberto Boubakar Malanchino, who bears an astonishing resemblance to the portrait of the Duke, headline the cast.

This screening marks the first-ever collaboration between arthouse pioneer Bronx World Film and the venue Cinema on the Sound, opened on City Island in the summer of 2022. Admission is free, seating limited and by invitation or reservation only. There will be a reception and Q&A with the Director afterward.
