Irish Band - "Pure Dead Brilliant"
For a rollicking good time join these Celtic sprites as their six member band sings and plays jigs and reels. These five lads and one colleen are steeped in the old traditions of Ireland and Scotland.
Alan Kelso hails from the British Isles and spent his holidays in either Dungannon, Ireland or Glasgow, Scotland. At family gatherings he learned to love the distinctive sounds of Celtic music. He sang Irish and Scottish ballads in the pubs there from the age of nine. He has also sung and performed with the Flagstaff Light Opera Company. Besides vocals, Kelso plays the spoons and tin-whistle adding to the lively rhythm of the band.
Rod Robinson on fiddle, concertina, guitar and vocals is a Texas-born Aussie from Down Under. He sang with the acapella group Red Pepper who came in second in the Australian Vocal Voice-off finals. Robinson played at the Australian National Folk Festival for several years and taught community choirs in Perth, Western Australia. Hes also a closet English Morris Dancer who keeps his bells and hankies at the ready for any passing troupe!
Stephen Babcock is the lead vocalist and guitarist and was professionally trained at the State University of New York and the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York. He has performed as a vocalist with the Tri-cities Opera Company in Syracuse-Binghamton, New York. Babcock writes and performs his original folk songs solo and with other musicians. Young people have benefitted from his work as a volunteer guitar instructor with Friends of Traditional Music and at the STAR School where he is a Special Educator.
Rebecca Cooke sings backup vocals and plays percussion. Cooke performs in Flagstaff Light Opera Company productions and with the trio Rag Tag in the childrens area of the Flagstaff Celtic Festival. She also enjoys dancing and can usually be coaxed off the stage for a waltz.
Michael Flores is an Arizona All State Musician, an award winning jazz musician and former principal clarinetist in the Northern Arizona University Orchestra. As an instrumentalist and vocalist he has performed classical music, musical theatre and folk songs.
Scott Law is a founding member of Pure Dead Brilliant and is exceptionally talented on the bodhran, percussion, guitar, harmonica and vocals. Sitting in with many other groups he has played sessions in San Diego and Denver as well as the Irish Festival in Phoenix. Much of the enthusiasm and excitement generated by listening to this band stems from Laws contagious love of a good time that he shares with all his fans.
Before the show we recommend that you stop by Marketplace Caf which will be serving a lunch of corned beef and cabbage. Reservations can be made by calling 284-5478. The cafe is just a short walk from the theatre.
