SHOLEM ALEICHEM: LAUGHING IN THE DARKNESS
Sholem Aleichem is the acclaimed Yiddish-language author who wrote about a time and place in Eastern Europe that no one else did: the late-19th century shtetl. He created Teyve the milkman, who of course later went on to fame and fortune on Broadway as the star of Fiddler on the Roof! A play noted not only for its amazing score, but for the story of the lives of the Jews in Europe many of whom were expelled from Russia in the wake of the pogroms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
