Guts Baroque plays The Weimar Social Club
Our first LIVE!!! performance tour in California since 2019 celebrates the friendships and musical exchanges between J.S. Bach, Telemann, and violin virtuoso-composer J.G. Pisendel. In addition to the music, we'll share with you what we found out about these specific pieces while looking at facsimiles of the original manuscripts.

In the meantime:

When J.S. Bach accepted the job at the court of Weimar, he crossed paths with Telemann, who was working in nearby Eisenach. The two quickly became friends and exchanged musical ideas for decades. When Pisendel passed through town, he became friends with both Bach and Telemann. Our concert includes a sonata Bach wrote for Pisendel, a sonata Pisendel likely wrote in collaboration with Bach, and a sonata by Telemann that Bach and Pisendel both likely owned a copy of.

And... buckle up. The Bach and Pisendel push hard on the harmonic boundaries of conventional Baroque music. The most apt phrase that arose out of our rehearsal process is: "this is METAL!!"

Join us in the beautifully resonant chapel at St. Wilfrid's, Huntington Beach, to hear for yourself what shenanigans these three got up to.

**According to the latest CDC Guidelines for counties with high transmission rates of COVID-19, all attendees and performers will be expected to wear masks for this indoor event. We are so excited to play for you in person again! Thank you for your consideration in making this possible by masking to protect each other, particularly the most vulnerable among us.**

Johann Sebastian Bachs Violin Sonata in E Minor, BWV 1023
Johann Georg Pisendels Violin Sonata in C Minor, aka BWV 1024

About Guts Baroque:

Guts Baroque brings beautiful and unusual music that we love from the 17th and 18th centuries to your ears, illuminating the stories behind the music and its makers and celebrating the warmth and vividness of historically-informed chamber music played on period instruments. A collaboration between Sylvia Schwartz, baroque violinist, and John Ott, scholar, baroque cellist, and viola da gambist, Guts arose naturally out of Ott and Schwartzs collaborations in the Early Music program at Longy School of Music.

Since graduating in 2015 and 2016, Guts has been busy establishing itself in Southern California and New England, presenting concerts in churches, breweries, gardens, and Groupmuses, as well as running their other ensemble, LEsprit Baroque. Guts made its Boston Early Music Festival Fringe debut on June 14th, celebrating more than a year of monthly livestream concerts. Immediately afterward, they held principal positions in the orchestra and performed in chamber salons in Portland Bach Experiences triumphant return to live performances. They are deeply grateful to have had each other and their shared music at home during this time, as well as to be finally reuniting with colleagues and audience members alike to create the peerless experience of acoustic live music. Ott and Schwartz also teach a plethora of violin, cello, and viola da gamba students, and have enjoyed bringing historical performance practice awareness to the public school orchestra programs in their former home of Irvine, CA. Guts moved to southern Maine in September 2020 and cant wait to share the magic of an in-person concert with you!

Our heartfelt thanks to Wendell Ballantyne and St. Wilfrid's for making this concert possible!
