Bay Area Boys and Young Men of Color Short Film Festival
For over five years, Brothers on the Rise (BOTR) has empowered Bay Area boys and young men of color with the safety, support and skills they need to succeed at school, develop healthy relationships and contribute to peaceful and just communities.
We have served over 700 low-income boys and young men of color in Oakland with literacy, life skills, leadership, and career development. We have also provided over 500 parents, teachers and youth workers with training and consultation on best practices of raising boys into men. We are now sharing our expertise with schools, nonprofits, and public agencies throughout the Bay Area and beyond, impacting thousands more and helping to build a movement!
Join us to support the growth of BOTR's award winning programs through our Winter 2013 Fundraiser: the inaugural Bay Area Boys and Young Men of Color Short Film Festival.
Besides viewing BOTR short films, we will present pieces by Bay Area youth organizations: RYSE, Bay Area Video Coalition, La Clinica de la Raza, United Roots, Conscious Youth Media Crew, and the Kapor Center's College Bound Brotherhood.
Special guest filmmakers who will share their work: Frederick Marx, Producer of the 1994 film, Hoop Dreams and the upcoming Rites of Passage: Mentoring the Future; and
Peter Nicks, Emmy award winning documentarian and the Director of the 2012 film, The Waiting Room.
Pizza bites and popcorn provided, and cash bar available for drink purchases (cash only).
$25 admission fee is for the film screenings, pizza bites, popcorn and a great program featuring members of the BOTR family and featured guest presenters.
Additional charitable contributions will be accepted as part of the program, so please consider bringing additional funds to support our work. Opportunity tickets will also be for sale. Prizes include two 49ers football tickets, a 90 minute massage, $75 Ms. Ollie's gift certificate, and a case of assorted quality wine.
