The Musical Offering in concert October 13th
October 13th, 2013 | 3:00PM Sundin Music Hall
Program:
Sonata for Cello and Bassoon, K.V. 292 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 3 Little Pieces for cello and piano, Anton Webern Langsamer Satz for string quartet, Anton Webern Trio #2, op.80 in F major for violin, cello and piano, Robert Schumann
A charming program fit for autumn, The Musical Offering performs its second concert of the year at Sundin Music Hall on the campus of Hamline University October 13th, at the usual 3:00pm time. Lyric works by Mozart and Robert Schumann bookend two highly contrasting pieces by Anton Webern.
Webern's "3 Little Pieces" is sparse, strong, and stunningly brief. At about thirteen and a half minutes, "Langsamer Satz" is not only Webern's longest work, it is also one of two known romantic pieces ever to be composed by Webern. Webern wrote this outpouring of love to his future wife after a hiking trip in Southern Austria; he remembers: "To walk forever like this among the flowers, with my dearest one beside me, to feel oneself so entirely at one with the Universe, without care, free as the lark in the sky above. Oh what splendor...when night fell (after the rain) the sky shed bitter tears but I wandered with her along a road." Between Schoenberg's 12-tone influence and Webern's own minimalism, we're lucky both pieces can reveal their own uniqueness on the same stage at this concert.
